A FIELD GUIDE FROM THE REIMER FAMILY

The river is
only the beginning.

Local food, wild river places, memorable day trips, and the small details that make a stay feel like a discovery.

THE GOOD STUFF, CLOSE TO HOME

More than a place to stay.

We'd rather help you find a memorable dinner, a quiet river path, or a drive worth taking than give you a hundred generic recommendations. Start with a few local favorites, then make the trip your own.

U.S. FISH & WILDLIFE SERVICE · THE UPPER MISSISSIPPI

A refuge for wildlife.
A chance to slow down.

The Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge protects more than 240,000 acres of river floodplain. Watch for eagles, migratory birds, wetlands and quiet backwater channels. Close to Guttenberg, the 0.6-mile Goetz Island Trail offers a short introduction to bottomland habitat, though it can flood.

The McGregor District office is appointment-only; the refuge trails have independent public access guidelines. The landscape is shared with working river navigation and important Indigenous heritage. Enjoy it gently: follow refuge rules, respect closed areas and never disturb wildlife.
